Posted by: admin

Press release 15 Nov 2013:
Knowsley Skills Academy, a charity, which provides young people with a programme of physical activities, team building and work related training and learning offering various qualifications and awards based on military ethos and run by ex-military personnel have been awarded £411,773 as part of a £4.8million grant by the Department of Education.
The Academy situated at Scotchbarn Lane in Knowsley provides training for pupils in partnership with schools and agencies throughout Merseyside and surrounding areas and has a proven record of re-integrating pupils who are not in education, employment or training and prepare them for post -16 courses or jobs. The Academy also provides early intervention in primary schools to help with their transition to secondary schools.
The grant has been made after research has shown that projects that many of the aspects of Military Ethos that we so value in our armed services , such as self discipline, confidence, leadership, citizenship and team work can and do help our young people take charge of their lives and build brighter futures for themselves, their communities and the country.
By using aspects of military ethos and values we aim to improve educational attainment of the most disengaged and disadvantaged children and young people using activities that develop and embed their personal learning, thinking and functional skills to help them achieve fulfilling lives.
The Director of Knowsley Skills Academy, Lieutenant Colonel (rtd) Anthony Hollingsworth MBE, said
“We are delighted once again to be chosen by the Department of Education to receive this funding, which allows KSA to continue and expand our successful provision of early intervention and alternative provision. The programmes we deliver help pupils to benefit from the military ethos projects. Military Ethos is about embracing standards and values, which instil teamwork, discipline, self confidence and good behaviour to enable them to become model citizens of the community”.

KNOWSLEY SKILLS ACADEMY RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM THE DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION

Posted by: admin

Knowsley Skills Academy is delighted to announce that it has received direct support from the DfE to deliver Military Ethos within Education. The funding will be used to target four specific areas.

1.    Early Intervention.Working in partnership with primary/secondary schools, to prevent pupils at risk of becoming disengaged or excluded from education. We aim to provide support to the teaching staff  in order to raise the self-esteem, resiliance and aspirations of young people, by means of focusing on personal qualities such as punctuality, health, well being and physical fitness, to aid their transition to secondary school.

KSA will achieve this by using selected aspects of traditional military training techniques* both in house and at school, on a basis of individual progression, and through educational development, specifically targeting functional skills. KSA staff will work along side teaching staff to identify and share best practices.

*The emphasis is on team work, mutual respect, communication, team building activities –   patience with others

2.    Alternative Education. Working in partnership with secondary schools, alternative provision providers and pupil referral units, utilising the core values of the military ethos to better equip young people to access mainstream education in order to be all they can be and achieve their  full potential.  The aim would be to boost self-esteem and provide structure and motivation to improve pupils educational attainment, by means of preparing them to reintegrate into mainstream educational environment.

3.    Post 16 Transition.Working in partnership with other agencies, to work with post-16 transitions from secondary to post-16 education/training who are at risk of becoming disengaged.

The emphasis for this group will be on values based leadership training and improving and developing their  personal abilities through military related individual and team tasks such as problem solving, incorporated work related learning. Our instructors empathise fully with these young people, being from similar social backgrounds and use personal experience, accrued from their military service, to fully illustrate “options” to these young people when making hugely important life choices.

4.    NEET.(Not in Employment, Education or Training) Working in partnership with other agencies, Registered Social Landlords and the youth service to reintergrate and re-engage young people to prepare them for post-16 education, training or employment.

In appropriate cases part time study. and training will be provided in house, alternatively in other cases through partner training organisations.  For example, promoting with young people the option of an apprenticeship or vocational training leading to a career or sustainable employment.
