Extracts From External Evaluation Report

The respect commanded by the KSA staff is a key factor in motivating the young people to achieve and progress.

The young people want to be seen to achieve by the KSA staff, they seek positive endorsement from the staff and when this happens, re their achievement is recognised by them it spurs them on to seek more achievement.

There is evidence of the organisational skills possessed by the staff (a core military skill) being transferred to young people. This is particularly useful for those young people who lead chaotic lives and find it difficult to focus.

During the evaluation a model/framework began to emerge in terms of articulating what underpins the success of the programme. The framework/process outlined below is an attempt to provide such a process. It is accompanied by comments from the trainers/tutors.

THE KSA MODEL

Get their Attention: By gaining respect, by the young person recognising someone has something to offer and wants to be accepted

Articulate Clear Values/standards: Encouraging the young person to relate to these values, why they are good and aspire to achieve standards

Model expected behaviour: By modelling positive behaviour based on values, value driven behaviour can lead to the achievement of standards

Get them to focus:  By developing their ability to concentrate

Get them to organise: By developing organisational skills

Keep them motivated: By recognising there is an exchange of equivalents, e.g. they can get X if they do Y

Get them to apply: By developing transferable skills

Get them to achieve: By developing ambition/aspiration

Get them to reflect: Why have they achieved? How have they achieved?
